Indoors

It’s about that time. Competition time, that is. This weekend I begin my short, but hopefully successful indoor season. There are years when athletes take Indoors less seriously than others, being that it’s not quite the same as our outdoor season and the major competition we are preparing for that year (Olympic Games or World Championships), but in an off year when there is no major outdoor championship, making the Indoor World team seems to take on a bit more importance. This year I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to compete indoors, and so I got off to a little bit of a late start with my preparation. But I feel good, and after this weekend I will have a better understanding of where I am. Here is a quick rundown of the couple of meets I will be making an appearance at.

January 30th – Flagstaff, Arizona: This meet will be my opener. I usually try to start my season at a low-key meet, where there is hardly any pressure and I can just compete and get the first-time butterflies out of the way. Of course I must pay out of pocket to go to a meet like this, but such is the life of a long jumper.

February 7th – Moscow, Russia: I am making a round-trip, west coast to eastern Europe trip to do just one meet. If it sounds a little crazy to you, rest-assured it sounds just as crazy to me. I was hoping one of the stateside meets would end up picking up my event (cough…Boston), but alas, this did not happen. So in order for me to actually get paid to work, I must fly 20 hours. It’s fine though. I’ve always wanted to visit Russia in the winter. :/

February 20th – Birmingham, England: I’ll be going back over the pond to do another meet before Nationals. Normally, I would have liked to stay in Europe and just compete in more meets, but they were just too spread apart to make it worth it. More frequent flyer miles for me!

February 28th – Albuquerque, New Mexico: Indoor Nationals will finally not be in Boston. (Thank God!) I get to buy myself a nonstop Southwest ticket and call it a day! My plan right now is to just compete in the Long Jump because I really would like to make the World team. Unlike outdoors, the Indoor team is just the top 2 finishers.

If all goes according to plan, this year World Indoors will be in Doha, Qatar, and I will be making that trip mid-March. I have no idea if the Middle East is a winter wonderland at that time of year but I’m excited to visit anyway. I plan on updating along the way and I kindly ask for your prayers and well wishes during this time.

Ms. Glenn,
So what's wrong with the Roxbury area in Boston? I wanted to move the kiddie's there, lol.

Maybe we'll see you in New Mexico!

Ms. Glenn,
Yes, this is a nice start to the year! Must give you a bit of a boost of confidence, considering all the changes for you. Happy to see it. You'll have s good year.

Now ...ain't that Christabel Nettey something? What a little darling young woman! Too bad her 60M Hurdles Final was slower than her Prelim. Still, 3rd in both events isn't at all bad for a Freshman.

And she came from Surrey B.C.?! Hummm … I better go check it out, see if there's an older version ...LOL!

Oh, and “Hercules” missed the Wind Factor stat on your Jump. Brrraaaawwww! (Like they had the fans going, lol)

@ You

Hey, hey, hey...now that wasn't nice and not true. Ha! :)!

The results were posted not on your last blog post but on a blog post not even on the front page of your blog anymore, which it is very unlikely anyone reads anymore. "Indoors" from January 29'th. It has been the Sahara desert of blog posts for some time now. Only I go here to see the past results.

I think your comment notification admin might not tell you which blog entry the comment is on and you got confused, thinking it was the latest blog post? This reply is there too.

This blog post, "Indoors", is the blog where all the other results were so it made sense to continue keeping the results here in one place as it would be easier to keep them up to date. They could have been posted on the latest blog but I decided not too! I posted the results not even expecting you to see them....only so I could keep track of them all in one place and most likely no one else would go back and read that blog either.

I thought about making some sort of conclusion on the distances, but thought it would not be my place, so I didn't. There is also no conclusion that can be made at the moment as it is still early. They are simply numbers which mean nothing.

Now having said this....the fact that you felt the need to make a new blog entry to defend yourself, and the numbers says more than the numbers......

Must we go over it again, that you were and are one of the top 13 jumpers in the world from last year and have to prove nothing to anyone!!! ??

Must we go over it again, that if you had jumped what you have consistently, and easily jumped in the past that you would have won Birmingham or at least would have come very very close!! ??

You were consistent and only fouled once in Birmingham which was an improvement. All the jumps were "good". But "good" gets you 4'th and not first! Granted, 4'th among some of the best in the world is pretty darn good! But, I think we want MORE than "good"! So we are at a crossroads....balls out hitting one or two big jumps per meet and fouling 3 times, or consistent hitting 4 of 5, but sacrificing distance?

Maybe balls out first jump, see what happens and how you feel. Then adjust from there. Maybe balls out second jump too. Then pull back and nail the third. Then balls out fourth and fifth jumps. Point being, there are times you have to double off the right field wall to drive in 2 runs to win the game and there are time you have to lay down a bunt to win the game. There is no clear cut answer...you just have to feel it and go with your gut based on how the meet progresses!

These trans-Atlantic flights are kicking your ass. Need to do something about this in your preparation, diet, sleep, or something...as you are like a hung over sponge saturated in syrup!

Most, most, most importantly is on the outside, being smiley, happy, having fun, loose....yet on the inside, being confident, strong, proud, a bit arrogant and cocky, an an intense drive and true belief and expectation that YOU are the best jumper there and you WILL win! Leaving all you have to give on the runway and pit!

Although you might not think so, I'm on your side and wish you much success. Sure, you don't like to hear some things but that doesn't mean that they should not be said.

So much for 40 days off! Thanks for sucking me back in! Ha!

Be well.
xo
