big sis/little sis

I’m a big sister. I take that position very seriously. It is my job to be the protector, to lead by example, and to always make sure that any counsel that can be gained from someone older and wiser is readily attainable. Whether or not that advice is ever sought out is another story. :)

My sister and I are close in our own unconventional way. I used to think—back when anything and everything she did made me want to scream—that we were far too different to share an extremely close bond like some sisters do. In our younger years we were probably inseparable. But as we grew up we took different paths and it seemed as if the little girl with the cabbage patch bangs and high-pitched Minnie mouse voice was replaced with someone who only knew how to get on my last nerve.

Thankfully though, my sister outgrew her selfish, rebellious stage. She became a mother. Thank God for un-planned pregnancies!!! ☺ In the last few years I have been witness to an extraordinary shift in her. It is the strangest thing to look at her and see a loving, caring, smart, less selfish adult. A mother. A wife. But at the same time my little sister.

Our lives are very different and in some instances it’s hard to believe that she’s the little sister and I’m the big one. This past weekend I attended her baby shower for kid #2 and I was struck by the surreal-ness of it all. I admire the person she has become and I am so proud of her. But even if she technically leads the more “grown up” life--complete with kids, husband, and a minivan-- she will always and forever be my little sister.

Brit, I love you and I am always here for you. I can't tell you how to potty-train your kid or how to file joint taxes, but any other big sis stuff is all me! (even if I can no longer pick you up for pictures like we always did when we were younger...especially at this size! lol.)

Sounds like your sis is a great person. I know how you feel. My sister is older but it seems like I am the older one but she is getting her life in order now and I am happy for her. What sparked this insightful post?

Ok jerk! You know how emotional I am right now. Why make me cry? You don't even know how warm you made me feel as I read this. This has got to be THEE nicest thing you've ever said about me. I honestly didn't know you felt that way, so like....proud. I love you Bri. I'm glad we're tight like how we were as kids, because those were the best times of my life. And I'm glad that we can be there for eachother in these important times in our lives now. I know you hate flying back and forth from AZ to CA but it just wouldn't be the same without you there for these events.
And for the record, I drive an SUV, not a minivan. There's a difference in the price of gas ok? hahaha

B, it's the prenatal pills. They make your hair grown like Rapunzel I'm not kidding!

anyway on the whole sister thing, i love it. your blog has now inspired me to say those three words to all 4 of mine--big, little, half and legal. matter of fact, imma throw my brothers in there too!

This blog is amazing and it's a beautiful thing that you two have such a relationship. I wish I had that with mine.

Brit, as for the prenatals - I'm with Melanie, which ones are you friggin' using?!? I've been on prenatals for about six months now (no, not preggars - but I was told to start the prenatals way before actually getting knocked up - heh) and I haven't had my hair OR my nails grow!!!

There are three boys in my family. I am 29, my oldest brother is 31, and my baby brother is 11. Growing up and even now to a degree, I have always been like the oldest brother. At times, again even today, people mistake me for being the older brother in the family because I am one the that stayed out of trouble, went to school, had a successful career, started a business and just acted more mature.

I never knew what it was like to have an older brother growing up because I felt I was it. My oldest brother now has grown a lot over the past couple of years because he now has a little boy and I imagine that in his mind he figured it was time for him to be an adult and the older brother.

There is still a constant battle of who is oldest out of the two of us, but I did not ask for it to be that way. I am proud of my older brother for how he has turned his life around. And at this stage in our adulthood, it is better if we just concentrate on setting a good example for our little brother.

You guys are so cute. You both make me proud (you must have gotten your sense of humor from me - you know how funny I am). Seriously, you brought tears to my eyes and I'm not even pregnant.
