The Art of Doing Nothing

I’ve found that the “idea” of sitting around and doing nothing is far more enticing than the practice of it. By the end of the season I am exhausted both mentally and physically. I eagerly await my season coming to an end so that I can do ab.solute.ly nothing. It’s imperative to give your body a time to really rest after the beating I put it through over the competitive season and since working out for me is my work, that leaves me with nothing on the agenda. But what I’ve come to realize over the years is that I’m not really the type of person who can do that for long. I go crazy.

In my younger years I used to think this would be the life. In fact, there was a time when I was in a relationship with someone when I distinctly remember telling this particular person that’s what I planned to do when we got married. I wanted to retire from track and then be a housewife. But I wanted to make sure I had a nanny and a maid. I was quite certain I didn’t want to actually do housewife work. I don’t know what I’m more embarrassed about, the idea that I wanted to have a life of doing nothing or the recollection that I wanted to marry this particular person. Either way, I’m glad I grew out of it.

These days, I spend about two weeks on my bum eating everything in sight and then I search out ways to keep myself occupied. Right now I’m at the end of my rope and I’m asking for suggestions. What are some different ways to stimulate my mind without doing too much stimulation to my body? Offer up your thoughts. Help save me from myself!

If it counts for anything, you looked hot sitting on my couch. That totally matters. Totally.

This made me laugh : )
I can't think of any good ideas?
Go to the library and look at some books in a section you would normally not look at, water paint, visit an animal shelter and pet puppies. How about that? : ) Good luck!

Cracking up at the petting puppies suggestion. I have a picture of her with her eyes swollen shut looking like she squared off with Mike Tyson after being around a cat once.

Ms. Glenn,
How about giving single parenthood a go for a few weeks? Go give Brit Brat a reprieve. She’d appreciate it. I Promise, you won't be bored. My guarantee.

My son would like to take you on a blimp ride.

He could pack a picnic, a nice bottle of wine and the two of you could take lot of photos and have a really nice day. You'd make his month and you just might find out you have lots in common.

Good luck son. :)

Your art of doing nothing amazingly made it to MyYahoo page.

After skipping workouts to hang out with friends during my college track career which came to an end when my highjump technique surpassed my body's physique, I suggest you find pack the iPod with Chariots of Fire, hit the elyptical, and then find a quiet spot in a busy mall to people watch. Nothing like counthing out of shape peeps to remind you what you're after personally.

I assume you will start training for Track Season 2011 in November or December. That will be here before you know it. You have been given some advice here, some of which is pretty good.

No suggestions here from me other than to sort through all these suggestions here and go for it.
Take Care

Son, just make sure you remember our talk about the birds and the bees and how we really didn't find you in a pumpkin patch. One night without a good hat could lead to 18 years of bad haircuts.

Now make us proud with your new girl!
