add or not: A Debate

So I have a few pictures from a photo shoot that I recently did and I am debating on whether or not I should add them to my website. Please note: I am not just asking whether or not you think it's a good picture. I will tell you upfront that I personally think I look pretty darn hot, but perhaps more in a Maxim/FHM sort of way (not that there is necessarily anything wrong with that per say). I realize that I have a lot of non-track related pictures up already and I am ok with that because I think it's important to show different facets of yourself and it also doubles as my modeling website, even though my opportunity to do any modeling in Tucson is probably slim to none. But this picture does push the envelope more than my other ones that I currently have up so I've been hesitant on adding them. My website is still very new so I'm not quite sure yet who the audience is or what exactly they are expecting when they visit. So please vote, but keep in mind the reason for my hesitations and not just on whether or not you dig it. If you'd like to go the extra mile, leave a comment to explain your vote.

....All in favor say "I"

" I !!! "

Well that was like a million people that just said "I" So that pretty much seals the deal ;)

Track and Modeling go hand in hand......it's artistic....don't worry about a thang...

its weird that 2 out of 3 of these yes votes are coming from anonymous individuals...hmm. what do you think that means?
i'll say this, first of all, you look absolutely beautiful in that shot. your eyes are very engaging, and would certainly make mr. j proud :o)
second...it wouldn't have taken much to airbrush your bra/bootie tan lines, but who am i to be an artistic critic?
as for whether or not you post it, (and i can't believe how bianca i am right now) i'm thinking no. its a good picture, and i would maybe change my mind for one thing...the buttcrack. i think that's creeping toward scandalous. women's magazine to men's, if you will (i'm so tyra banks right now!).
anyway, i have no idea what the audience is for your website, but i guess you oughta think about the image you wanna convey. it sorta seems to me that if you're cool with any old random seeing your bootie bootie bootie bootie rockin everywhere, you might as well take the big money & really do that mens mag.

Beautiful picture (but that is expected given you are a beautiful woman) but I think the butt crack showing is a little too much for the website at this point. I say no.

Femininity and sports aren't all too synonymous these days. You would be doing a favor to women in the track and field community to show that ladies can be fit, aggressive, and very athletic but yet still posses that beauty and femininity. Real talk.

Hi Brianna,

Two things;

First: As Black women we are always in the difficult position of having to deal with stereotypes regarding our sexuality. Either we are portrayed as sexless or over-sexed. So I think it's hard as individuals to know what's okay.

Second: Honestly I think your face says so much that the 'skin' is detracting from it. You have intense eyes that convey complexity and intrigue. That's hotter that the skin.

Thanks

mella...this is sooo different than if i would have done "the" magazine but no so different than the ad that is coming out in a couple of months, don't ya think? that ad is definitely supposed to be "sexy" although it still isn't crackalicious like this picture. :) i guess my point is that tons more people will see that then will see my website so i'm not so sure if there is a difference or a reason to omit this when i've already done that.

anonymous #3...i know that the booty crack is what puts it over the top and it's possible that there is one that have that covered which i could ask for, but i'm sure he chose this one because my face was the best so it's still a possibilty i could use a less stellar picture and take away that problem if i wanted.

montavious...you are right, the feminity part is very important to me.

mes deux cents...is that an "i don't know?"

I think this picture is amazing. It's sexy, not raunchy. So I don't see any reason not to put it up. Perhaps ask yourself this question (at least this is what I do a lot of the times), if you had a little girl, would you mind seeing a picture of her like this? and/or would you mind her seeing this picture?

Personally, I don't think it's any more "revealing" than the one where you have the sneakers covering you...only I think this one is far more glam.

Just my two cents. :-)

As if I don't have enough things to deal with, I gotta decide whether or not I want the world to see my sister shirtless, laying in what seems to be a cloud of some sort, with plumbers crack! Well I voted "I don't know" because honestly I don't. Like Christy said, this picture isn't much more risque than the one with just the track shoes covering your breastseses, but it seemed like that picture was more focusing on the women's athletic physique then being every mans fantasy(not to say some men don't like women to be as buff as they are haha). This one isn't really about you being an athlete but can still hang with the sexy people, it's you BEING one of the sexy people. And if that's what you want to convey then that's how you would do it. But if that isn't what you're looking to get across to those seeing it, then maybe for you, the ass crack is a little much. Plus you're silencing all rumors that you might have a 'ghetto booty' because this picture clearly shows that you DON'T! haha But yeah, hope that made a little sense. Think about exactly what you're trying to make your point, and then decide if this picture makes it appropriately. Plus, W.W.Y.M.S.(What Would Yo Mama Say)?

I say no. Unless of course you’re just reminding people how hot you are, there’s no need to post a pic like this on your site. People who want you to do this kind of modeling aren’t the people going to your site (unless you telling them to). People who are seeking out your site are people who know you’re an athlete and want you to look like one. If you want to expand the kind of modeling you’re considered for then it seems like the best option would be putting a card together with some of these shots, and having your agent/agency shop it around. That’s my two cents.

Honey it all depends on what YOU want your website to be. If you want it focus more on your athletic career, then I vote no. But if you want it focus of ALL of you and your life outside of athletics then I vote yay b/c it is a pretty freakin hot pic ;)

Brianna said...

christy...thank you, i definitely don't want raunchy! I would want my little girl not to be "little" but i don't think i would mind. and yes, i do have some other revealing pics in my repotoire, this just might be the only one that leaves out the athletic element.

brit...you make me laugh. i've been waiting all day for your comment! i think you make a lot of sense except for the part about the "ghetto" booty. i like to think it looks quite round. ;) and come on now...mama probably wouldn't say anything. she's become silent in the last 10 years or so!

dinar...wow! i would have never expected you to say no of all people! ;)

melanie said...

i'm just enjoying reading the dialogue, here. :o) and inspite of her being really non-committal, i think brit made some good points.
i guess you're right about the "the" mens mag vs. the ad, too. i just think the crack is too much. it's not like you won't look beautiful/sexy/athletic/feminine or any of that good stuff in other pics, though, bri. it isn't like this is the only shot you've ever looked pretty in! i think there shouldn't be so much on it. just cover your butt. no one needs to see it to be convinced that you're sexy...although, if "the" magazine editors get a glimpse at it, they might just throw a more lucrative check your way...lol...i'm just sayin ;o)

melanie said...

haha! i'm excited, cuz were online at the same time!
woohoo! pull yo pants up! pull yo pants up! (i never thought i would use those ridiculous lyrics to apply to real life! really though, two inches up and you're in a pink ad for vicki's secret...as it is...preparation h. ;o)

Brianna said...

LOL...preparation H????? I was thinking more along the lines of coppertone!

Hey Brianna,
First of all, you know that I'm a HUGE fan of yours, your artistry, your work in sports and what you stand for. Also, I love the fact that you are confident in who you are and what you stand for and are willing to ride till the end for that. Having stated that, I feel this in regards to the picture:

One, I think the complexity of the picture speaks a whole lot to your character. Yu come across as a very confident and driven woman that knows what she want. And, that clearly shines through in your eyes from the picture. Your eyes have a whole presense of dominance with a mind hint of innocence. Its very sublime and beautiful. Also, your skin tone is somewhat of a beautiful blend that shows reality, pureness and care; and, I think that should be celebrated.
Secondly, however, lies the "crack" topic of the picture. I know that it creates a sense of turmoil and conversation amongst your viewers, but I see something completely different. When I look at this picture, I see a collision. I see a lot of what I remember fondly as a memory of sports, specifically track. I see a point where the sweet and pure feminality of your being meets the pure verocity of the sport and what you do in it. It's interesting when you really look at track and field. Most people find many facets of the sport to be entertaining, but realize the level of dedication and perfection require. Track and Field athletes are special specims, trained and trim like a fine sports car. So, I suppose there are elements of each athlete that should represent the same. Also, you are gorgeous, flat out bottom line. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. Yet, everyone placing you being a black female athlete in a box and I like that fact that his not only pushes the envelop, but it also does it and says, "I don't care". However, it really depends on the image that you are trying to portray and to what audience; Because, unfortunately, many people that come across your page will just be looking at the surface and wont be able to see all the beauty, emotion, art and perspective that is being potrayed in the photo.
So, those are just my thoughts on it and where I'm coming from on the topic. Feel free to write back, if you'd like.

Tough one...beautiful picture. I think that goes without saying. If it were my picture, the only thing that would give me pause of course is the bottom...lol. I only say that because I'm usually hesitant to share photos that are "sexy" because at the end of the day I'm like..."I'm Jackson's Mom!" I know that you don't have any kids, however sometimes approaching a dilemma as though you do gives you a more broad and healthy perspective.

Ultimately, after looking at the picture 1000 times, I say no. Your butt is not even the most compelling part of the picture. I almost didn't even recognize your face in the photo! It completely puts your ass to shame! I was drawn to everything else except your butt, not that there was anything wrong with it...lol.

I don't think I've ever seen you look more beautiful, HOWEVER, I think you are FAR too fabulous to allow just anyone to see you...unless of course the money has exchanged hands already! Thanks for the sneak peak though!!

Quite Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is. Mostly the people that know Bri are affiliated with track and field in one way or another, so then we understand the ins and outs of our sport and don't even see scandalous modeling as TABOO or something. I say go for it Bri, I've got the track thing down right now and might even venture into modeling myself because of what you have done. Also the presentation of your modeling doesn't pose any threat to anyone or anything, it's sleek and sexy. Plus this will broaden your career most likely in many ways. best of luck though! =)

My first impression was WOW. I had to look twice to make sure it was really you.
You are so photogenic and the camera loves you. No doubt, but I must say this photo cause a little strife in me.
My first thought was yay, and then it was nay and right after that came the thought I really don't know.
It's all about you and your image. What do you want the world to see? Are we looking at a "dare devil" or are we dealing with a "classy lady"?
If you feel comfortable putting yourself out there, then do you. However at the end of the day it will be you and your conscience. Can you live with it?
Food for thought.

So I voted "I'm not sure" but now that I'm commenting I'm going to change that vote to "Hell to the naw" (although a simple no is closer to what would actually come out of my mouth).
First let me say that I LOVE THIS PICTURE!!... But there was an initial hesitance in me when I read that you were considering putting this photo on your site. There is a very fine line that seperates a regular sexy picture from a MAXIM-type picture, and I'm not even sure that this one crosses that line, but I would say that it straddles it.
The fact is that you don't know who will be looking at your site or for what reasons. If someone wants to hire you for a modeling job and wants to see if you can pull off this type of look (which obvioulsy you can), it would be just as easy to send this photo over in an email. However, if the Girl Scouts of America (or any other wholesome group that you can think of) wanted to hire you as, lets say, a spokesperson, you wouldn't want them to have to think twice about it after seeing this.
People who know you know that this is one of many fly ass pictures that range from athletic, to fun, to sexy, to just plain silly. People who don't know you though could assume that this photo is more indicative of who you are as opposed to the others.
I say you were hesitant for a reason...

One, you're HOT.
Two, if we were sitting on your bed in West LA working on your website together (bring back any good memories?!), I'd vote no.
Three, I miss you. More than quesadillas and Capri Sun!

Don't get it twisted, there WILL be a glossy, poster size print of this hanging in my office, I was just saying...

I think you should add it. You never know if there is some modeling agent checking out your website. Go for it Bri!

Brianna,

My vote would be no.

focusonwin...there is a lot there but definitely thanks for sharing and i'm glad you think so highly of me. :)

kiajeen...i am hoping it is a very long time before i think of myself as "mommy" but i totally get what you are saying.

janelle...thank you. i do hope that most people realize that my interests go further than just track and field and that i like the fact that i can diversify my look.

bianca...do you really think i needed for you to respond to know your answer??? lol

t.v...to be honest, i don't really think this says i'm not a classy lady so that's not what i struggle with. everybody has their lines in the sand so to speak, but the fact of the matter is, i wouldn't have took the picture if i thought it was a bad represenation of me or something i was against. it's just that on my website it becomes part of my "first impression" so i was just kind of getting a feel as to what others thought when they saw it.

nikkie...you're right, the girl scouts probably wouldn't be impressed. but to be honest, if maxim called i'd probably say....maybe. lol. so is this different? i don't necessarily think that the money should be the deciding factor.

jasmine...i knew you'd probably veto this right after you veto'ed my peach background. love you

Oh Bri...Brit said WWYMS. She should have said WWYAS. She says NO. I looked at your face and saw such beauty and then got to that "crack". It doesn't matter..black or white, athlete or not. You have and show so much class that you really don't need to cheapen your look. Maybe I'm just older and think imagination is such a good thing. I read your responses to the other folks who felt the "crack" lessened the pic so I know you won't be happy with my opinion. You just don't have to show all your "gifts". I love the pic though otherwise and I hear they do amazing things with airbrush.

Well I totally agree with your statement of yourself. The picture is a great photo of you and it would be a cover shot for sure in one of those Magazines that you named off. I feel that it all depends on what you are trying to go for on your website? I think you are doing good so far adding pics of your life not just track but letting your fans see a diffrent side of you. I think I would personally wait to put a pic like that up and wait to save it for a big Magazine deal or bring it with you when you go to interview at a photo shoot or something like that. The reason why I say this is because you want everyone to wait to see you in a pic like that one, that way when you do hit the cover of a magazine it comes as a surprise to everyone. (Notice how I said when you do make the cover) The pic is great but I would just hold off on it for now hit everyone with that surprise. Love what you are doing stay focus. God Bless

Re: the comments about this being a "men's pic" or a "MAXIM" or whatever - I completely disagree. I'm a relatively conservative, 36-y/o woman and I don't think there's anything raunchy about this pic (if it makes you/ppl you love feel better, you can always Photoshop the crack out by bringing up the pants). But this picture, to me, is sheer beauty. I honestly didn't notice the "crack" until I ready your blog. Your face is absolutely STUNNING in this picture and it draws you in. If you were doing the whole open mouth or finger in your mouth or something cliche like that, it would change the entire picture. But as it stands I think it's beautiful (btw, showed the bf and he completely agrees with me - although he is a lot more liberal than me LOL)

Brianna said...

aunt s...i have to find a way to put reverse parental controls on this blog. :)

christy...thank you, i agree. i know the difference between trying to give that "i'm so sexy, i know you want me" look. that's not what i was going for.

Anonymous said...

You ride the fine line quite well madam. Sexy but not sleazy and your eye's are very engaging, so is the small line of crack. A flick like this has the potential to spread like wild fire a gain the attention of many who'd normally not scratch deeper then the surface. Sure they may be a bunch of crack heads but they'll quickly learn you're far from one dimensional and one of the few dynamic enough to pull this off. "Do it, do it."

Anonymous said...

Brianna, listen to your sister. Don't show the crack.

Gosh, what a debate on this. I don't know if I'd put it up, but then again, if I looked as beautiful as you, I might want to plaster my photo all over everything. ;) I think I'm leaning towards no but I think you look amazing.

Noooooooooo. Think of the younger folks who will look to you as a role model. Consider the christian tone to your website. Beautiful picture but too close to crossing the line.
